Higher Education Residency Requirements

By MargaretDayton

I was able to introduce my bill that makes it easier for Utah Military families to access the instate tuition to which they are entitled – especially if their military assignment has taken them out of the state for the past few years.

Here are pictures and a video of the Lt. Col Liechty and Lt. Liechty who are from Senate District 15 but currently serving in Afganistan.  They explain the challenge that their family members have had registering in our system of Higher Ed.

The text of this bill can be found at: http://le.utah.gov/~2011/htmdoc/sbillhtm/sb0046.htm

One Response to “Higher Education Residency Requirements”

    Hello,

We are struggling with the residency issue right now. My husband grew up in Layton and we graduated from Weber State before coming on active duty in the Army. We have submitted a retirement request and will come back to Utah to live this summer.
Our oldest daughter is a high school senior here in Hawaii and is attending Weber State this fall with a Presidential scholarship and a Weber Edge scholarship. She cannot have the Presidential scholarship without the Weber Edge scholarship. The Weber Edge scholarship covers the out of state portion of the tuition and the Presidential covers the instate portion but the Weber Edge requires her to live in the dorms even though we will live in the Ogden area. We need the Weber Edge scholarship because of the residency difficulties.
This will help us with her residency and we are interested in when it will pass and become effective.
    Thank you,
    Karen Garner
